Conference "For Your Freedom and Ours: Polonia and the Struggle for Polish Independence" is scheduled to take place on 21-22 September 2018.
Daemen College, Amherst New York, USA.

The Center for Polish Studies and Department of History & Political Science at Daemen College invite proposals for 90-minute panels and/or 20-minute individual presentations from across the humanities and social sciences for a conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of Polish independence. Proposals should deal with the Polish diaspora and its role in the creation of a new Polish state in 1918. While related conference activities will have a special focus on Polonia in Buffalo, Western New York and Southern Ontario, we welcome papers and panels dealing with Polish diaspora communities around the world -- Chicago, Moscow, Sao Paulo, and beyond. We anticipate papers and panels dealing directly with World War I, but we also encourage proposals dealing with the engagement of Polish diaspora communities in the independence movement during the long 19th century. Proposals dealing with literary and film depictions, historical memory, and the commemoration of independence in public history are also encouraged.

The keynote speaker will be Professor James Pula, an award-winning historian and author of several books about Polonia. Related events include: a tour of the special exhibition on "Camp Kosciuszko: The Polish Army at Niagara Camp, 1917-1919" at the Niagara Historical Society & Museum (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario); a guided tour of other sites associated with Camp Kosciuszko; and a performance by the Chopin Singing Society of Buffalo, including music by Ignacy Paderewski. A volume of select papers will be published by Towarzystwo Przyjaciol Nauk w Przemyslu (Society of Friends of Learning, Przemysl).

The deadline for submission of papers and panel proposals is 1 July 2018. Please send all proposals to awise@daemen.edu. Paper proposals should include name, email address, paper title, and a 200-word abstract. Panel proposals should include this information for all panelists, as well as the name and email address for the chair/commentator. We will respond to all proposals by 1 August 2018.

Organizers for the conference are Prof. Andrew Kier Wise (Daemen College) and Prof. dr. hab. Tomasz Pudlocki (Jagiellonian University). Sponsors include the Center for Polish Studies and the History & Political Science Department at Daemen College, the Permanent Chair of Polish Culture at Canisius College, and the Society of Friends of Learning (Przemysl, Poland).
