The Exhibition Szczecin Vanguards collects works by contemporary artists related to The Facultuy of Painting and New Media of The Academy of Art in Szczecin, processing the ideas of classical vanguard. The frames of the display are the local context – histories of two institutions of bourgeois origin, the museum and the artistic higher school. Their primary negation and, resulting from it, reform were the basis of vanguard project of early 20th century.
The Academy of Art in Szczecin, the youngest Polish artistic higher school, for seven years not only fills the gap in university level education. Like the local school in 1920s, it also animates local environment with newcomers from Poland and from abroad. Called a name wchich bears tradition, but building its structures from the scratch, it is driven by reflection on experiment in science and in life. Therefore the Szczecin Vanguards exhibition joins historic works of art (from the collections of The National Museum in Szczecin, The National Museum in Warsaw, The Lublin Museum, Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz, Zachęta Contemporary Art Gallery in Szczecin, Bernhard-Heiliger-Stiftung / Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin, Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur in Berlin and several private collections from Poland, Germany and Belgium) with their contemporary re-interpretations or testimonies of the contiuity of vanguard idea.
